"Star Sand" - Foraminifera - Okinawa, Japan

14.95

Foraminifera or “Forams”, date back hundreds of millions of years in the fossil record and are used as index fossils or ‘age markers’ in countless fossil sites around the globe. They are incredibly important for the location of hydrocarbons in drilling sites.

In a few very special locations “Star Sand” can wash up on the beaches. These are simply the remains of tiny (1-3mm) sea creatures that have a harder exoskeleton that remains behind when they die.

The small size of these forams allows them to be washed through the waves with little damage and most of the pieces you will find in here are fully intact!

This sand has been washed, screened, sorted, and placed in a glass 3 dram (12ml) vial with a black plastic screw cap for easy display. Each vial will ship with an ID card so you know all about your new specimen!
